The United Church of Canada announced on July 20, 2011 that it launched an emergency appeal for the Horn of Africa.

The United Church immediately responded to this crisis with a commitment of $50,000 to the humanitarian relief work of ACT Alliance and partners such as the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the Organization of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), who work through their member churches to respond to the immediate needs of people affected.

The United Nations has now declared a famine in two Somali states.

*Pray for the millions of people facing drought, hunger, and conflict.

*Pray for the host communities in the region who welcome those seeking refuge from the drought and conflict in their home countries.

*Pray for United Church Mission and Service partners and humanitarian relief agencies working to meet the needs of those affected.

*Pray that regional governments and the international community will work together to address the current crisis, and to reduce the effects of future droughts in this and other regions of the world.
